ILLEGAL HOLIDAY - Liverpool Echo 22/08/1916

LIVERPOOL APPRENTICES FINED AT MUNITIONS COURT

Forty apprentices employed by a Liverpool engineering firm were charged at the Liverpool Munitions Tribunal today with absenting themselves from work without leave on Monday August 7 which in ordinary circumstances would have been a Bank Holiday.

The excuse advanced by the youths was that they did not receive war bonus.

A deputation had waited upon the management but their demand for war bonus was not complied with and the apprentices intimated that as a protest they would go out. It was pointed out that by doing so they would render themselves liable to prosecution under the Munitions Act and that such conduct would seriously impede output.

The Chairman (Mr C.W.W. Sturridge) said it was a pity that young men did not realise the seriousness of refusing to work. As their wages were so small, a light fine of 4s would be imposed on each.
