Holy Trinity War Memorial

ukniwm 2409 cUnknown0001-001.jpg

The Holy Trinity War Memorial was originally from Holy Trinity Church, Parliament St, Toxteth. It listed the names of 83 men who were connected with the church, all of whom were casualties of the First World War.

The information given was only initial(s) and surname for most of the men, the exceptions being three men who were given their title of Dr and 'Dr Noel Chavasse VC. & Bar'.

When Holy Trinity was closed, the memorial was moved to the nearby St James' Church, when this church also closed in the early 1970s the memorial was left in situ. The Holy Trinity Memorial was discovered during works in the church in 1978 and was cleaned and hung in the chancel, it later disappeared and turned up in the 1990s in a pub.

The photo on the left was taken in 1996, for the War Memorials Online database of the Imperial War Museum, at this time the memorial was hanging as a decoration in the Slaughterhouse Pub on Fenwick St, Liverpool. As you can see the name of Noel Chavasse has been highlighted and a photo of him hangs next to the memorial. This highlighting would have been the work of the pub decorators, when the memorial hung in the church all the names would have been equally gilded. They also removed a carved crucifix which was originally in the centre where there is a plain cross in this image.

The memorial disappeared when the pub was renovated and has not been seen since.

You can read more details about the memorial on the Imperial War Museum's register of war memorials here:

If I may blow my own trumpet a bit here, it was my research that identified their 'unknown' memorial as being from Holy Trinity Church. One of the factors that helped prove it was the Holy Trinity Memorial was the fact that Holy Trinity Church had an associated Industrial School and many of the names on the memorial were 'old boys' of the school, Noel Chavasse was a patron of the school and volunteered with the children there when he was in Liverpool.

As it's taking a lot of time to sort out and present this information, I've linked below to my rough research spreadsheet, it should update as I add information. Please note that this is a working document and may contain mistakes that I would usually edit out before publishing, it might also be of interest to someone to see how I keep notes on my research - this spreadsheet summarises my research and each man named has a file to keep copies of any documents or emails etc that come up in my research.
