The Elder Dempster steam ship S.S. Burutu sank on 3rd October 1918 with heavy loss of life. Due to the fact that the ship was not sunk by enemy action, very few of those on board were eligible for a war grave or commemoration on a memorial. 18th Oct 1918 Dundee Courier Official intimation has been received that Mr David M Kennedy, second officer of the Burutu, was drowned when that vessel was lost. Mr Kennedy had been ten years at sea and had the reputation of being a skilful navigator. He served his apprenticeship in the Den Line. Mr Kennedy was the younger son of Mr and Mrs Wm Kennedly, 14 Thomas Street, Dundee.

12 Oct 1918 Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette Among the few passengers rescued from the ill-fated liner Burutu which sank after collision last Thursday night was Capt. Arthur Howe, brother of Mr F. Howe, Milton Avenue, Wellsway, who married Miss Woodrow of Westgate Street. Capt. Howe, who was returning home to Bristol from West Africa, has many friends in Bath who will be pleased to hear of his safety. The Burutu sank in ten minutes, no time being given to launch the boats.

19th Oct 1918 Cheltenham Chronicle The remains of the late Mr T.R. Beale-Brown, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., West African Medical Service were laid to rest in Dowdeswell Churchyard on Saturday afternoon last. Mr Beale-Brown was drowned as the result of a collision at sea off Fishguard whilst returning from the Cameroons in the Burutu in which 160 of his fellow passengers were also victims. His body was recovered in Cardigan Bay.

14th October 1918 Liverpool Echo ALEXANDER - Through collision at sea of Burutu, aged 48 years, JOSEPH(Joe) the dearly-beloved husband of Margaret Alexander, 5 Webster-road. Funeral will leave above address 2pm Thursday next, 17th inst - deeplt mourned by his wife and children. The casualty list shows that Joe Alexander was the chief cook of the Burutu.

10 Oct 1918 Western Daily Press A BRISTOLIAN'S ESCAPE Mr Arthur J Goodwin, son of Mr A.J. Goodwin, Queen's Road Clifton, was one of the fortunate survivors of the disaster to the Burutu. He is executive engineer at Port Harbour and was coming home on leave. He escaped with slight bruises and shock.

8th Oct 1918 Evening Telegraph BROUGHTY FERRY MAN ON BOARD AND MISSING Mr Wm Martin, postman, 2 Taypark Place, Broughty Ferry, has been informed by the owners of the Burutu that it is feared his son David Martin (23) has gone down with the vessel on which he served as fourth officer. He has been five years away from home, and has been on board several vessels which have been torpedoed, one being the Carmania.
